Sonora ISD to offer free meals districtwide under Community Eligibility Provision for 2026–27

The Sonora ISD Board voted unanimously on July 27 to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2026–2027 school year, enabling all students in participating campuses to receive free breakfast and lunch without submitting individual applications. Trustee Brenda Mungia moved to approve CEP participation and Trustee Mason Martinez seconded; the motion passed 7–0.
Katie Ruiz described the program during the agenda discussion as a mechanism that "allows students across the district to eat free breakfast and lunch without having to fill out applications." District staff will complete required enrollment and data collection steps to finalize participation before the school year begins.
