The Board opened with multiple recognitions: high school tennis and water-polo teams from Mission High School and Veterans Memorial High School who qualified for bi-district and district championships; Mission CISD staff who will present at the Texas Association of Bilingual Educators conference; and librarians honored for an on-campus hygiene closet. O'Grady Elementary music teacher Leroy Cano was singled out after performing the Heimlich maneuver and helping a choking student return safely to class.
Dr. Sharon Roberts, Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, reviewed the district's Beginning of Year (BOY) reading assessment procedures for PreK through grade 2 under Texas Education Code Chapter 28.006 and described how commissioner-approved instruments are used for screening, progress monitoring and dyslexia screening at required grades. The presentation emphasized statutory compliance and early intervention processes.
