Council approves parking-width variance for proposed multifamily project and awards bid for park bleachers

The council unanimously approved a development request to reduce the width of up to 20% of parking spaces for a proposed 52-unit apartment complex, a change staff said will slightly lower impervious cover and help drainage in the Gill’s Branch watershed. James Carey of Carey Development Services explained the proposal and said the spaces designated for the reduced width are on remote edges of the lot; PNZ recommended approval. Council members emphasized preserving 10'×20' standards for single-family homes while allowing denser parking standards for multifamily developments.
Separately, council authorized up to $126,600 for purchase and installation of bleachers for Mayfest Park, Rusty Reynolds Field and Fireman's Park. Staff reported a low bid from North Carolina Welding ($85,000); council noted that engineering and concrete work remain to be bid. Both actions passed unanimously with council discussion focused on drainage, parking-code amendments, and project engineering next steps.
