It’s gotta come to council,” she said. Staff reported Lone Star Poetry generated 658 hotel nights during the week of Feb. 16–22 and drew visitors from 15 states; after applying a comparative metric, staff recommended $20,000 and said it will vet supporting documentation and return with an agreement.
Council members voiced concern about precedent and fairness—citing a $299,000 shortfall in HOT receipts YTD—and discussed developing clearer, metric-based criteria for future HOT awards (for example, a hotel-night formula). Motion to approve the resolution (conditioned on staff verification that the event’s expenses met HOT eligibility) passed 4–1. Council directed staff and the city attorney to prepare the required agreement and documentation before payment.
