The sheriff told the court an increase in deputies and in-mileage requires more fuel money and vehicle replacements. He proposed adding $75,000 to the fuel line and sought roughly $216,000 to purchase about 5.5 vehicles (a mix to replace older Explorers and add capacity). The sheriff said two Explorers have high mileage and two Tahoes have been retired from the fleet.
Commissioners cautioned that outfitting vehicles with cameras and laptop hardware would create additional IT costs; the chair noted that new on-board cameras would increase demand on the county—s IT budget by an estimated $50,000 to $25,000 depending on the configuration. The court asked the sheriff to provide a prioritized replacement list and clarify which retiring vehicles could be repurposed for nonpatrol duties.
