The Menlo Park Planning Commission on Aug. 10 voted unanimously to approve a use-permit revision that allows a roughly 249-square-foot single-story bathroom addition at 470 Santa Rita Avenue.
"We are proposing a modest approximately 249 square foot single story addition to the existing house," said Eva Sabala, the project's architect, who represented homeowners Prashant and Rohini Marella. Sabala said the design includes a bathroom expansion, a walk-in closet, screening landscaping and engineering revisions requested by staff, and that neighborhood outreach produced no objections.
Staff said the project is categorically exempt under CEQA Guidelines Section 15301 (existing facilities). Commissioner Schindler asked whether overgrown hedges that intrude into site triangles are routinely enforced; planning staff Sam Sandmeier told the commission that such cases are handled by code enforcement and are primarily complaint-driven. "That would be a code enforcement issue, but that's mainly complaint based," Sandmeier said.
Commissioner Ferrick moved to approve the use-permit revision; Commissioner Schindler seconded. The commission approved the motion 5–0 with two members absent. The commission closed the item after the vote; the staff report notes that appeals to the City Council are available under city procedure.
