Jon Mendez appointed to fill vacant Ward 2 council seat

The City Council appointed Jon Mendez to fill the vacant Ward 2 seat created by the resignation of Emily Holden. City Recorder Leanne Steadman said three applications were received; the council interviewed Mendez and Mike Charlo (Margo Piver was absent). Mendez described his community involvement, work in child welfare and bilingual family advocacy, and efforts on South Main Street revitalization; Mayor Mike Odman recommended appointment.
Councilor John Lyon moved to appoint Mr. Mendez to fill the unexpired term; Councilor Destiny Jensen seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Steadman said Mr. Mendez's oath of office would be scheduled at the August council meeting. Councilors noted the decision was difficult given multiple qualified applicants.
