A board member (speaker 5) described the mechanic’s view that the system would reduce repeated outside diagnostic and repair bills and provide more immediate on‑site diagnostics. “He said it would be 3 years paid off at the rate we're going right now,” the member said, noting average outside bills near $800 per call. Another member echoed that in-house diagnostics would cut recurring voucher costs to external mechanics.
The board moved, seconded and approved the purchase by voice vote. The purchase is to be paid from the designated budget line (DA5130.2 in the packet). Staff and highway leadership said the investment should reduce downtime for equipment and likely pay back within a few years.
