Fred Comstock told the board he estimates the town faces a shortfall of sand of about 10,000 yards and presented county bid numbers for screened sand at approximately $10 per ton.
"I estimate about 10,000 yards we're gonna need," Comstock said, then walked the board through conversion math: one yard is roughly 1.4 tons, so 10,000 yards would equate to roughly 14,000 tons and, at $10 a ton, would cost about $140,000. He urged the town to consider digging the upper portion of the town pit or testing town-owned parcels that may contain sand to avoid purchasing this volume.
Comstock also said mining-permit rules limit removal without a permit to roughly 1,000 yards at some locations and cautioned that obtaining a mining permit could add both cost and time. Board members asked clarifying questions about hauling, truck capacities and fuel costs and thanked Comstock for the presentation.
