Commissioners approve application for INDOT grant; staff aims for 2027 construction season

Adams County commissioners voted to authorize staff to include county financial commitment letters and apply for an INDOT road grant, a step county engineers said is necessary to pursue available federal- and state-funded pavement dollars. Staff noted the county is not eligible for a full $1 million award because INDOT now distributes some funds directly to counties based on lane miles, but said the application will target remaining discretionary funds.

"With your approval, we'll make that application happen," the staff member leading the presentation told the commissioners. He said the application window opens in September and that, if the grant is approved late this year, the county would advertise for bids as soon as possible and expect construction in the 2027 season, with an 18'to'24-month build window depending on contractor schedules. Commissioners moved and approved the request to pursue the grant.

Why it matters: pursuing INDOT funding could reduce the county's local outlay for the project and accelerate repairs to county roads. The board asked staff to return with advertising plans and confirmed it will bring required documents before the council where appropriation or matching decisions arise.
