Board members reviewed proposed language in Series 8000 that touches on physical-education requirements and the district's practice of "varsity release," under which some grades-10-to-12 varsity athletes are exempted from attending their scheduled PE period while they practice after school.
A staff speaker explained the current practice and said the district provides varsity release for 10th through 12th graders participating in varsity sports if they meet specified fitness or participation requirements. A district staff member cautioned that New York State physical-education rules require students to receive a minimum amount of instruction, and said further research is needed to confirm the district's approach.
"I would have to look deeper into it, but based off of what I know... they have to participate in physical education class," the staff member said, adding that the administration will research the legal compliance and return with proposed procedural safeguards to prevent students from wandering during released periods.
Board members voiced concerns about student supervision and safety if students are released from PE without clear procedural controls. One member asked staff to draft a sentence for the policy that would let the superintendent or designee set procedures to implement varsity release in a way that ensures safety and compliance; the board agreed to review the revised language at a next reading.
