Kershaw County Council honors former Sheriff Steve McCaskill for 36 years of service

Kershaw County Council presented a proclamation Tuesday honoring former Sheriff Steve McCaskill for "36 years of extraordinary and exemplary public service to the citizens of Kershaw County," reading the document aloud and inviting family and colleagues forward for a photo and remarks.

Councilman Danny Cato read the proclamation and summarized McCaskill’s tenure, noting the sheriff’s work on community initiatives and construction of the current county sheriff’s office in Lugoff. As Cato read, the council recited specifics of the proclamation: "whereas former sheriff Steve McCaskill has dedicated 36 years of extraordinary and exemplary public service to the citizens of Kershaw County" and described his service from January 1995 to January 2011.

Several council members offered brief tributes after the proclamation. Members said McCaskill’s leadership coincided with large operational changes — the introduction of computer systems, K‑9 and bloodhound units, hostage‑negotiation training, and other specialized teams — and thanked his family for their sacrifices. The council concluded the item with a unanimous voice vote among those present to approve the proclamation and invited the former sheriff and his family to come forward for photos.
