Windermere Lake Association thanks Pine County for AIS funding after 2024 milfoil spike

Representatives from the Windermere Township Lakes Association — Dan Benzie, Bill Yackel and Lauren Radke — told the Pine County Board their 2024 Eurasian watermilfoil outbreak grew from tens of acres to roughly 100 acres across several lakes and that county support and a change in treatment approach led to a marked improvement in 2025. Dan Benzie, the association chair, thanked the board for prioritizing flexible AIS funding and said the county’s support made a significant difference for their response capacity.
Lauren Radke, the association’s AIS representative, described how the group switched applicators to PLM Lake and Land Management and used a DNR-recommended herbicide, ProcellaCOR, which targets milfoil. Radke said that with correct dosing by acre-foot and a new treatment approach, treated acreage dropped from about 100 acres to roughly five or six acres in the most heavily affected waterbodies. The presenters said they will seek state grant funds and use a follow-up point-intercept survey after treatment to document results; they requested continued access to county AIS funds for 2025 work.
