Mecklenburg County lists payment options, warns of card fees and online bill-pay risks

An agency official listed available payment methods for Mecklenburg County property tax bills and warned residents of fees and potential risks with some electronic options.
“You can pay in cash at the tax collector's office, pay by check or money order, pay by credit or debit card,” the official said, noting there is an additional fee for card use. The official added that taxpayers can pay by electronic check (e-check) and through a bank's online bill-pay system but that the county does not recommend the latter in case a payment is rejected and interest still accrues.
The county advised confirming that payments have been accepted to avoid interest charges that “cannot be removed later from the tax bill.” The announcement also reminded residents that if their mortgage company receives the bill, the company should pay from escrow but homeowners remain responsible for ensuring timely payment.
