An agency official for Mecklenburg County said payment for the 2026 property tax bill is due on September 1, and taxpayers have until January 5, 2027 to pay without accruing interest.
The announcement explained that bills are mailed each year by the end of July after elected bodies in the county set the tax rates in spring. The official emphasized that even when a mortgage company receives the bill and pays from escrow, the homeowner remains ultimately responsible for ensuring payment.
The detail matters because property taxes fund local services such as police and fire protection, trash and recycling pickup, transportation and street maintenance, as well as water and sewer. Late payments accrue interest that “cannot be removed later from the tax bill,” the official warned, reinforcing the county’s recommendation to confirm payment status before the Jan. 5, 2027 interest-free cutoff.
