Maplewood staff proposes raising backyard chicken limit to eight, council discusses grandfathering

City staff said the pork-and-poultry portion of the proposed Chapter 10 amendments would increase the number of allowed backyard chickens from six to eight, citing surrounding jurisdictions that allow eight. "We were looking at a lot of other codes around us. Everybody else allows 8," staff said during the work session.
Council members discussed whether new setback or distance requirements would require relocating established coops and suggested grandfathering existing structures. Staff said they would check inspection records and complaint history to assess whether a new setback is needed and recommended grandfathering any existing coops if the council adds a new permanent-distance requirement.
