Paul Williams of Sanford Main Street presented a fundraising check to the Central Florida Zoo, reporting the campaign sold more than 3,000 T-shirts across 40 states and Puerto Rico and raised $69,076.60 for sloth-related care and exhibits.
"We sold over 3,000 of them to 40 different states and Puerto Rico also," Paul Williams said during his remarks, thanking volunteers and local partners who packed and shipped shirts for the fundraiser.
A zoo representative provided an update on the animals supported by the donation, saying the eight sloths currently in the zoo’s care were "stable" and that the facility expects some animals to transfer to other AZA institutions while roughly three would remain and be placed in a new exhibit.
Commissioners and staff thanked Sanford Main Street and volunteers for the community-driven effort and noted the shirts will be made available in the zoo gift shop going forward. The check and public recognition concluded with the mayor thanking the organizers for community-led projects that supplement city services.
