City Manager Jared Atkinson told the council that staff had been notified the city received a Transportation Security Administration law-enforcement officer reimbursement grant totaling $146,000. Atkinson said the grant could fully fund a proposed reclassification of airport police positions and help restore competitive pay grades for airport officers "with no net cost back to the airport." He asked for general agreement from council so staff could return detailed numbers at the Aug. 25 work session.
Atkinson said the airport operates as an enterprise fund and that the airport police are not a subsidiary of the Lubbock Police Department. He said the reclassification and pay adjustments respond to recruitment and retention challenges at the airport and that officials would present final budget numbers in two weeks. "If we accept this grant, I think then we can fully fund ... reclassifying those officers," Atkinson said.
