Residents urge Brewster County to fix deteriorating roads in Veterans/Double Diamond

Several residents from the Veterans and Double Diamond neighborhoods told the Brewster County Commissioners Court on Aug. 11 that long-delayed road maintenance has left some roads effectively single-lane and unsafe.
"It is effectively a single lane road," Janet Moller (Precinct 4) said, urging the court to "provide a specific plan and time frame for bringing these roads back to a safe and maintainable condition." Bluejay Murphy described deep windrows and ruts, said rocks had caused tire blowouts for neighbors and asked the county to remove windrows and restore proper crown and drainage so tractors, mowers and emergency vehicles can access properties.
Other speakers, including Robert Johnson and Bill Seaman, backed the call for scheduled maintenance and for the county to bring in base material and compact roads properly where ruts have cut to bedrock. Ray Darragh said in some paved sections ditches have been filled by pushed material and recommended ditch cleaning to prevent water from undermining pavement.
County officials acknowledged the concerns and said they would inspect the area. Road and Bridge staff later reported heavy rains had damaged many roads across the county and that crews were hauling material and repairing washouts; they also noted a recent maintainer computer failure that has been repaired and said some operator training needs were apparent.
The court announced it would visit the Veterans area after the meeting to inspect conditions and follow up with residents.
