Lubbock council sets proposed maximum property-tax rate, schedules public hearing for Sept. 1

The Lubbock City Council voted 7–0 on Aug. 11 to adopt a resolution setting the proposed maximum property-tax rate for the 2026–27 budget and to schedule a public hearing on the proposed rate for Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. City Manager Jared Atkinson told council the resolution fills two roles: it sets a not-to-exceed rate and it schedules the public hearing where the council will consider the final rate.
Atkinson summarized staff recommendations and said the council’s action today establishes a ceiling they may lower in September. Council member (speaker 7), who made the motion, read the proposed figure on the record before the vote. The mayor asked for a recorded vote; the resolution passed 7–0. The council noted the number is a proposed maximum; final adoption will occur after the public hearing and any further adjustments by the body.
