Douglas County approves 2026 appropriations for local nonprofits and services

Following presentations from local organizations, the Douglas County Board on Aug. 19 approved a package of 2026 appropriations for community services and nonprofits.
Among the approved amounts: Douglas County Water Quality Legacy Fund $25,000; Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging $9,534; Alexandria Senior Center $20,000 (Commissioner Meyer recorded a no vote on that item); Rainbow Rider $142,042.55 (operating) and $27,010 (capital); Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce $4,000; Central Minnesota Elder Network $12,000; Douglas County Fairboard $25,000; Douglas County Historical Society $25,000; Douglas Soil & Water Conservation District $299,178 (county allocation) and $12,503 (local water plan levy); Lakes Area Humane Society $16,000; West Central Initiative $11,040; Alexandria Economic Development Commission $57,750; City of Osakis EDA $7,000; Viking Library System $146,769; Regional Radio Board $16,565.78; and Glacial Ridge Trail $1,000.
Presenters included Tara Bitzan, Jay Sieling, Heather Pender, Shelli-Kae Foster, Brenda Brittin and others who outlined requests and program purposes. Votes were recorded for each appropriation; most passed unanimously. The approvals direct county finance staff to include the appropriations in the 2026 budget and to process grants or contracts as required.
