Community speakers urge inspectors, oversight and inclusive selection process for next sheriff

"Please commit to a permanent inspector general to monitor the sheriff's office," said Beth Von Emster of the ACLU San Mateo County chapter.
Other commenters described jail deaths and long‑running concerns about secrecy and demanded structural reforms rather than only personnel change. Several speakers referenced AB 1185 as an authorization for more robust oversight and urged the board to act quickly to restore public trust.
