District expands workforce development and internships tied to bond projects

Facilities staff described summer internship placements that gave high school students site exposure and technical learning opportunities, and credited the program manager, Firdos Fazeli, for organizing the internships. Presenters said internships included visits to construction sites and a steel mill to learn trades and careers in construction.
The district said it amended its community workforce development agreement for another five years and added 10 projects to the agreement, three of which will enter construction next year. Tracy said the district is planning contractor outreach fairs and coordinating with partners (Long Beach City College and Cal State campuses) and the Port of Long Beach to increase local subcontractor participation and to grow pre-apprenticeship and local hire pipelines.
