Coaches recommended that if the board wants next-cycle goals aligned with the 2028–29 budget, trustees should start community listening in winter/early spring and draft goals in late spring so the superintendent has time to align budgets. Greg Klein noted the board adopted a coaching timeline on 03/05/2025 that runs through Dec. 31 of the coaching year.
Several trustees pushed back on the pacing. One board member urged caution about initiating a new cycle while the district is still monitoring the current goals, saying the board could confuse the public if community engagement for future goals begins before results on the present goals are clear. Coaches said the board has flexibility to push the listening window later, but that delayed adoption reduces the superintendent’s lead time to shape budgets.
Superintendent Zaid confirmed the district is already working on the next-year budget and said staff aim to think two-to-three years ahead while meeting annual requirements. No formal schedule changes were adopted at the meeting; trustees agreed to continue discussing timing at future sessions.
