Michiana approves police radio tower replacement, introduces new recruit and recommends pay increase for officers

The Village of Michiana council voted to replace its aging police base radio tower for $2,540 after Police Chief Ryan Layman said the station’s tower stopped working after about 25 years. The motion to approve the purchase was made by Tim McCarthy and seconded by Mike Mumper; it passed unanimously.
Layman also introduced Brendan Stadler, a new hire from nearby Grand Beach who is scheduled to attend the police academy in May. Layman asked for public help after 12 trees were cut down at Stop 40 on Village property and said the department has obtained additional information and encourages anyone with knowledge to contact the police. Following a closed session, the council recommended an hourly rate increase for the village’s two full-time officers, to begin April 1, 2025; the recommendation passed by roll call vote, 4 ayes to 0 nays.
The radio-tower purchase, new hire announcement and the pay recommendation reflect a multi-part effort the council described as focused on officer retention and basic equipment reliability. The council recorded no dissent on the radio purchase or the personnel recommendation.
