Michiana council praises new park lawn and irrigation; watering scheduled and no extra maintenance cost planned

Council members and staff told residents Oct. 11 that the new park lawn project is essentially complete and that routine maintenance will continue under existing village operations. Mike Mumper said work with contractor Down to Earth is ongoing for the new irrigation system and that staff will fertilize and mow now, again in November, and once more in the spring.
On questions about ongoing maintenance costs, resident Kathleen Hogan Morrison asked whether the new lawn would increase upkeep expenses; the council replied it would not. Mumper thanked Street Superintendent Rick Reitz and staff member Josh for their work getting the irrigation and water running. Mumper also said the new pump is ready and staff hope to install it in November when water demand is lower.
The council discussed no new recurring expenses for mowing or leaf cleanup; watering of new trees will follow prior practices. The park update had been added to old business earlier in the meeting and drew several operational updates rather than policy choices.
