The Village of Michiana Council voted Sept. 6 to proceed with a major renovation of the park lawn, approving contractor proposals and capping the total spend at $40,000.
Councilmember Mike Mumper moved to approve two proposals — Down to Earth for $19,000 (irrigation) and Serviscape for $20,260 (regrading, leveling and hydroseeding) — and amended his motion to a not-to-exceed total of $40,000; Tim McCarthy seconded and the motion passed on a 5–0 roll call. Mumper said the project will include fencing the seeded area until spring to allow the turf to establish while keeping the playground and pickleball courts open via a temporary entrance route.
The council noted timing is critical because of weather windows for hydroseeding. According to the minutes, an anonymous resident plans to make a substantial donation to support the work; the council said budgeted capital-improvement funds will also be used. The council asked residents to avoid the fenced areas while the new grass establishes.
The decision follows earlier Old Business updates on the Village Hall renovation and fundraising (lighting sales and poster proceeds were cited as contributions to the hall-renovation fund).
