Johnsburg board votes to eliminate electronic-waste fees at transfer station

The Johnsburg Town Board approved a resolution to stop charging residents for electronic-waste drop-off at the Jonesburg transfer station. Pete, speaking for last year's solid-waste committee, said that when transfer stations stop charging residents they are often not charged themselves by vendors, and that neighboring county transfer stations already offer free electronic-waste disposal. "If we don't charge, they don't charge," Pete said, explaining that eliminating the town fee will reduce costs for residents while the county handles some exceptions such as fluorescent bulbs and mixed batteries.
Pete described operational issues with the previous vendor and noted that some older electronics are difficult to recycle because vendors prioritize newer, higher-value components. The board moved and approved the resolution by voice vote. The measure is intended to improve access for residents and reduce administrative friction at the transfer station.
