Monterey County schedules workshops for East Garrison historic‑district master plan

Shandy Carroll, representing the successor agency to Monterey County's redevelopment agency, outlined planning work for the East Garrison Historic District, saying the district includes 23 former Fort Ord buildings that were originally envisioned for artist live/work spaces.
Carroll said the county and consultant Gensler are developing a feasibility plan informed by market conditions, facility condition assessments and community need. She noted that in 2024 "the slated development nonprofit partner pulled out of the project due to lack of economic feasibility," prompting the successor agency to reassess options. The county will hold two community workshops — in person on Aug. 20 at the East Garrison Regional Fire Station and a virtual session on Aug. 25 — and will circulate a linked survey to gather broader input.
Carroll said the project may require amendments to existing plans and documents and that the successor agency will check in with a community advisory committee before next steps; she encouraged participation from residents, creatives and potential local businesses interested in the site's future.
