A councilmember reported on a Republic Services ride‑along and urged the council to consider recognizing drivers for difficult work in Rolling Hills.
The councillor described five scooter drivers and a mother truck covering roughly 70 properties per route. "It is amazing how hard these drivers work and how difficult the job is," the councillor said, recounting that household waste averaged two to three containers per property and green‑waste pickups averaged six to eight containers, with one property observed to have 21 cans. The report noted route constraints: many properties are steep, have narrow drives and require careful manoeuvring, occasional scooter breakdowns, and long trips back to the transfer station to offload.
Members praised the crews and asked staff to check with Republic Services about a driver appreciation event or an article in the city newsletter. Suggestions ranged from lunch or ice cream for crews to a photo and a short profile in the city’s Stroll publication. Council asked staff to determine what recognition the drivers would prefer and to return with options.
