San Mateo County farm value rebounds to $106.5 million, crop report shows

The San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner presented the county's 2024 crop report on Oct. 7, reporting a gross value of $106,488,000 in agricultural production — a 7.6% increase over 2023.
Corin Whittle, the county agricultural commissioner, told the Board that floral and nursery crops remain the county's largest commodity group at roughly $60 million of the total and that indoor greenhouse production accounts for much of that value. "For 2024 the gross value of agricultural production in San Mateo County was $106,488,000," Whittle said while walking supervisors through commodity breakdowns and trends. He noted that indoor cut flower acreage continues to shrink in the face of foreign competition and that livestock values saw notable increases.
Supervisors asked about farmers markets, regulatory burdens on small vendors and opportunities to build county demand for coast‑grown products. Supervisor Mueller outlined a pilot with County Health to purchase coast produce for county food service and urged closer coordination on distribution and cleaning/processing capacity.
The board accepted the report; staff said crop reports and data tables are available on the agricultural commissioner's website.
