The City Council moved an ordinance to dispose of four pieces of surplus personal property during the Committee of the Whole on March 10, 2026. Public Works identified the vehicles as a 2011 Ford Taurus with about 140,000 miles, a 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid with about 80,000 miles, a 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid with about 80,000 miles, and a 1994 Ford Versalift with about 20,000 miles. The vehicles are being replaced as part of the City's fleet update.
Public Works staff noted operational concerns with the hybrid SUVs, saying their gas/electric systems that switch between modes make them less practical for police duties. The Mayor suggested exploring transfers to nearby fire departments — Alderman Rada also recommended outreach to York Fire Department — before proceeding to sale or disposal. Attorney Ramello clarified there is no specific dollar threshold that requires separate City Council approval and that all disposals must be approved by council.
What's next: the ordinance authorizing disposal was moved to the Consent Agenda for approval; staff will follow up on offers to other departments and report back.
