Consultants from OHM Advisors on Tuesday presented a community engagement strategy to guide Royal Oak’s zoning ordinance rewrite. Adam Cook said the project will center on a project website built on Esri’s platform that integrates surveys, a comment map and an interactive zoning map so residents and users can see proposed changes geographically. “We are looking forward to presenting kind of the engagement strategy, as we move forward into the fall and then into next year, when we get a draft zoning ordinance into the adoptions process,” Cook said.
Julia Upfall described the survey approach and listening events: the team plans targeted listening sessions of roughly 10–15 participants (60–90 minutes) focused on users who regularly interact with the ordinance, and an opt-in survey hosted on the project site to collect detailed user-experience feedback rather than a randomized, statistically valid survey. Cook said the project timeline anticipates a public informational session in February–March 2027 and ordinance adoption in late spring into summer 2027. The commission asked consultants to coordinate with city staff on map labeling, data accuracy, and communications materials before the website launch.
