Board approves Mako Marine tiki bar, accepts off-site parking plan and pedestrian access

The Horry County Zoning Board of Appeals on Nov. 10 approved a variance for Mako Marine Bar & Grill to construct a 2,477-square-foot deck and tiki bar over a waterway in Little River, contingent on standard staff conditions and the off-site parking plan presented by the applicant.
Attorney Howell Bellamy said the applicant is seeking a 100% variance from on-site parking rules and described multiple off-site, unimproved lots that together provide 88 parking spaces. Civil engineer Matt Hynes told the board the parking areas currently provide 49 and 31 spaces respectively and said the total available spaces would exceed requirements even accounting for previously approved variances: "in total ... that would require 37 spaces, of which we're providing 88," he said.
Presenters said the project ties into a planned county boardwalk and pedestrian improvements; they also noted Army Corps of Engineers and state approvals for a walkway and boardwalk connections. Members of the Little River business community, including Jennifer Walters of the Little River Chamber of Commerce, voiced support; a business and property owner urged the board to permit development that could boost waterfront commerce. After board discussion and a motion to approve with staff conditions, the board voted in favor.
