Horry County votes to shorten solid waste convenience center hours, recognizes Easter holiday

County staff recommended reducing operating hours at Horry County convenience centers and recognizing Easter as a holiday for the solid waste authority. Staff said a 10‑day sample from five centers showed the final hour of operation accounts for about 6 percent of total traffic; staff recommended closing at 6:00 p.m. to improve safety, staffing and recruitment.
"Everything associated everything collected inside of the last hour represents about 6% of your total traffic," Mr. Gilberts said while presenting the study and the proposed change. Council members discussed tradeoffs between convenience for residents and staffing and safety for employees. A motion to accept staff's recommendation (closing centers at 6:00 p.m. and observing Easter as a holiday) was made, seconded and carried on voice vote.
