Iowa Primary Care Association outlines behavioral-health navigation for Ringgold County

Miranda Wachter, District 4 Leader with the Iowa Primary Care Association, told the Ringgold County Board on Aug. 10 about statewide behavioral-health navigation and local resource challenges.
Wachter said the Iowa Behavioral Health Service System (BHSS) provides a comprehensive safety net that connects residents to mental-health, substance-use and problem-gambling resources. She explained District 4 covers 14 southwest Iowa counties and emphasized challenges in rural areas including provider shortages, long wait times, transportation for involuntary commitments and the additional staffing burden placed on schools and law enforcement to coordinate telehealth and other services.
Representatives Becky Fletchatt (Public Health) and Amber Godwin (Iowa's Behavioral Health System Navigation) were present and discussed coordination needs. Wachter agreed to share available state data and to connect with Ringgold County’s interagency group so local needs and available resources can be better understood. County-specific data was not yet available at the time of the meeting.
