Lawton drivers run "bus rodeo" to sharpen maneuvers and boost student safety

A staff member for Lawton Public Schools said the district held a "bus rodeo" in which drivers practiced right- and left-hand turns, backing and weaving to rehearse pickup and drop-off procedures ahead of the school year. The staff member said the exercise is meant to "sharpen skills" and let supervisors identify drivers who need additional practice so problems can be fixed quickly.
"We're doing our bus rodeo, which means that we're doing maneuvers...and actually doing the proper procedure for pickup and drop offs," the staff member said. The staff member framed the drills around safety for children and described the practice as a way to ensure routes are run consistently during the year. The session also included a simulated railroad crossing and a backing drill to mirror real-world scenarios.
