Planning Board weighs tighter shed rules after training on accessory units

Chairperson Alexandra Welsh and members of the Town of Huron Planning Board discussed possible revisions to local rules governing sheds at the Oct. 8 meeting.

Board member George Steffler said trainers at a recent session described a "shed" as being classified as an accessory structure and noted a trend of sheds being converted into living spaces. Rachael McGrath proposed updating town regulations to specify that sheds should not have electrical power and should not be permanently affixed to the ground. Roger Gallant explained the existing 75-foot setback is intended to keep sheds out of front yards. Alexandra Welsh said she will gather additional information and bring recommendations to a future meeting.

The Board did not take formal action on ordinance language at the meeting; members signaled interest in clarifying local code to address conversions and utility service. Any specific amendment or formal recommendation will require drafting and later a vote by the Board and, if adopted, would follow the town's standard review process.
