Board members approved a revised Policy Advisory 275 governing the teacher residency program. The revision narrows earlier language that appeared to obligate the district to hire residents and instead makes hiring contingent on district vacancies and resident performance. "If the district has the position and if the candidate, while in residency in the district, was a good candidate that fulfilled their obligations, then they should be, you know, part of the hiring pool," a presenter said during discussion.
Board members noted the district had previously hosted residents (two residents two years ago produced a fifth-grade teacher and an art teacher) but had not placed residents more recently. The residency remains a year-long program intended to extend student teaching and provide a livable stipend; the board voted to approve the policy changes unanimously.
