Newfane public works: lead sampling plan, sewer plant progress and permit surge reported

At the Sept. 24 meeting Highway/Water Superintendent Jon Miller updated the board on several ongoing operations: crews have been repairing water leaks and replacing sidewalks on Main Street, hydrants were replaced on Hess and Jacques Roads, and the department will begin lead sampling that requires about 40 samples "by the end of January" to meet compliance targets.

Miller told the board the lead service line survey will be a multi‑year effort involving resident cooperation. He also noted upcoming winterization work for water pipes and routine highway tasks such as ditch mowing and building driveway pipe installations.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Nick Irr reported construction progress: "We have finished the aeration piping so that is up and running now. We are learning the new equipment and working on getting quotes for further equipment. The plant is running well and we have compost available." Building Inspector David Schmidt said permit activity has risen sharply, with 137 permits issued year‑to‑date compared with 105 for all of last year; the town has completed a mobile home park inventory and will proceed to others in its assessment update work.

The reports gave the board an operational snapshot and identified near‑term tasks including resident outreach for lead sampling and equipment procurement for the wastewater plant.
