Village authorizes engineer work after sanitary backup affects home on West 123rd Street

The Village of Alsip authorized staff to begin engineering work to locate and install a clean-out after a sanitary backup began affecting a house on the 3600 block of West 123rd Street. Mayor Zell described the problem as a potential public-health issue: MWRD identified tree roots and said the existing connection is a 'blind connection' that the district cannot access for inspection.

On the record, the mayor summarized two options: a smaller, less invasive parkway clean-out (recommended by staff, estimated $5,000–$8,000) to provide a bidirectional access for hydrojetting and televising, or a full parkway manhole (estimated $14,000–$20,000) if structural defects are found. "The pros of that are significantly cheaper, faster to execute...the cons is does not fix structural defects if the blind connection to the main collapse," the mayor said. By roll-call consensus the trustees approved moving forward with the engineering work to establish a clean-out so crews can televise and clear the line.
