District adds security staff, SROs and contracted armed guards to campuses

Director of security Jose Otero said the district expanded physical security staffing over several years: in 2018 the district had a director of security and a single traveling guard; in 2021 the district hired a security director and began adding unarmed and armed contracted security teams. The district maintains an SRO who travels among buildings and has Patriot Security contracted guards at several sites.
Otero said Patriot Security's guards are current or former police officers and that the district now has four Patriot guards deployed across buildings, plus additional unarmed guards: "we're really lucky to have 4 Patriot guards throughout our district," he said. He described roles for guards and unarmed personnel—patrolling arrival/dismissal, athletic events, monitoring halls and directing students to staff when needs are identified.
The presenters said guard staffing decisions were shaped by community feedback and safety assessments. No vote or contract details were provided in the presentation; board members raised budgetary and resource questions later during general reports but the meeting did not include a procurement vote on security services.
