During new business a trustee flagged that the board's policy manual has not been comprehensively reviewed in some time and proposed a systematic review.
The trustee said there are “a bunch” of policies that likely need attention and suggested reviewing at least one policy per month so the board can discuss and amend where necessary. The trustee added: "I don't want us to get caught in a gray area again," and asked that policies that may be noncompliant with law be brought to counsel in executive session rather than discussed in public session. Other trustees agreed this is a sensible approach and noted the state has required many policy changes in recent years, which has driven the district's policy work.
The board directed that members identify specific policies they want examined and that those items be considered in an executive session with counsel as appropriate. No formal policy changes were adopted at this meeting; the discussion ended with agreement to circulate materials in advance of a future session.
