During public comment, a resident asked whether the proposed school calendar includes the Eid ul-Fitr holiday and expressed frustration that prior petitions had not produced change.
The speaker said community members had asked for the district to include the holiday and noted that some buildings in the area had previously accommodated similar requests. The resident added: “I can tell you that there have been members in our community who have shown up since then. … It is a little frustrating.”
Board leadership responded that Eid is not included on the calendar being voted on that night and that the board has discussed the issue with legal counsel. The chair said the district’s approach will be to create a formal, uniform process and policy for future requests about adding days off, rather than changing this year’s calendar. The chair noted other nearby districts have handled holiday inclusion differently and that the district is not closing off future consideration.
The exchange closed with the board reiterating that a policy will be developed for future requests; the immediate calendar before voters that night will not include the Eid holiday.
