District teaching-and-learning team describes review process for challenged library titles

Board members raised concerns about library materials and whether parents were involved in decisions about selections. Teaching‑and‑learning staff (Dr. Alvarado) detailed the formal review process: committee composition included administrators, union members, site administrators and T&L staff; members reviewed resumes and materials, voted on each challenged title, and drafted formal letters explaining decisions and alignment to board policy. Dr. Alvarado said, "We reviewed all 11 titles...Once we met, as a team, we noted on the challenge whether the team member had read the material in its entirety or had just read the resume...We also conducted votes for each of the books."

Staff reported three recent challenges (none from district parents) and said they would meet quarterly to review future challenges. The board asked staff to publish the review process and the roster of actions so the community can see how materials were evaluated and where titles were reassigned or retained.
