Board honors five Teachers of the Year and names Rose Stivalo District Unsung Hero

The New Providence Board of Education set aside time at the March 26 meeting to honor district teachers and to recognize a student as the 2026 District Unsung Hero.
Mr. Henry presented the high‑school Teacher of the Year award to Daniel Barletta, citing his leadership in Tech and Construction courses, club advising and coaching. The board also recognized Brian Cooper (Middle School), Michele Picarelli (Allen W. Roberts), and Jennifer Minich (Salt Brook) for long service, instructional skill and student‑focused work. A series of student and parent testimonials were read aloud; one student wrote about Barletta: "Mr. Barletta is very nice and welcoming. He always teaches us in an encouraging way, where he lifts us while also pushing us further to progress and become better."
The board read and adopted a resolution naming senior Rose Stivalo as the Union County Unsung Hero; Mr. Henry described her leadership in raising awareness of pediatric cancer after a family loss and her peer‑mentoring and cheer participation. The resolution passed on a recorded roll‑call vote with all members voting Yea.
