Seaside SD 10 board adopts updated supplemental transportation plan

The Seaside School District 10 board on May 20 approved updated supplemental transportation Resolutions 3 and 4 that formalize districtwide walk zones and the conditions under which the district must provide student transportation inside statutory limits.
Transportation director Chris Peters told the board the update documents hazard conditions and codifies three reasons students within the one-mile (elementary) and 1.5-mile (secondary) statutory limits may be approved for bus service: students with qualifying special education needs, students who lack a safe route to school in documented hazard areas, and instances that formalize existing stop locations. "Supplemental plan basically identifies when the district is required to transport students," Peters said, adding the plan was updated for the district's current school configuration and will be submitted to the state board for approval.
Board members asked for and received a numerical estimate of affected students: Peters said about 121 students fall inside the new districtwide walk zone, with roughly 41 elementary students and 25 secondary students potentially approved under the plan; he cautioned those counts could change with enrollment. Following a motion and second, the board voted to approve Resolutions 3 and 4 to adopt the updated supplemental transportation plan.
The resolutions will be forwarded to the state for final review and approval; the district will apply the criteria in coming years as routes and enrollments change.
