The motion failed when the board recorded more opposing votes than supporting ones.
Board members then approved a compromise: a single rate of $100 per student per year with no additional charge for second or subsequent sports and a family maximum of $300 annually. The board noted hardship waivers will remain available. Supporters said the change aimed to reduce financial barriers to participation; opponents warned the district must absorb the lost fee revenue and noted athletics historically runs over budget.
"We need to try something to incentivize our community, kids, parents, to create more participation," one director said during debate. Finance staff estimated the district collects roughly $9–10 per student on average from participation fees and emphasized the larger athletic budget pressures the district faces.
