NJSBA presenter urges Pinelands board to set distinct board goals and use action plans

Tim, a presenter from the NJSBA branch, told the Pinelands Regional School District Board that board goals should focus on the board team's behaviors and responsibilities rather than operational goals for the superintendent. "Board goals are your opportunity to reflect on what's working and what's not working for your board team and then to look at how you can improve as a team so that you can have the positive impact that you should be having on on behalf of all the students in the district," he said.
Tim walked the board through an action-plan template that lists activities, responsible board and staff parties, required resources, timelines and indicators of success. He emphasized periodic reporting on progress rather than waiting until year-end, and reminded members that the superintendent evaluation has a statutory July 1 deadline. He offered to work with the board directly to draft goals or to let members digest materials and submit ideas by email for collation ahead of the next meeting.
