Pleasanton students pitch 'SportsStack' equipment‑sharing pilot; commission asks staff to explore

A group of high‑school students presented SportsStack, a community box containing shared sports equipment for park visitors, and asked the Pleasanton Parks & Recreation Commission to consider a one‑month pilot at Creekside Park. The students described safety design features — slow‑closing hinges, rounded edges and ground anchors — and said they perform weekly check‑ins and collaborate with local partners.

“Our solution is to introduce SportsStack to Pleasanton Parks,” said Leah, one of the student presenters, describing a water‑resistant box stocked with donated equipment that park visitors can borrow and return. Presenters said a Livermore Area Parks and Recreation Department (LARPD) prototype drew rapid positive feedback and on‑site donations during a test run.

Commissioners asked technical and programmatic questions about anchoring, upkeep and liability. A student described proposed anchor‑bolt installation into concrete and the team said they would solicit donations of maintenance items like pumps and rely on weekly volunteer checks. Commissioners also suggested signage and outreach via the city website and neighborhood apps to promote returns and donations.

Following the presentation and questions, a commissioner moved that staff “investigate the pilot program for the city of Pleasanton to see its viability, and to see what next steps need to be done.” The motion was seconded and, after roll‑call, passed unanimously; commissioners directed staff to work with the parks department on logistics and return with recommendations.

The commission did not adopt a binding contract or commit city funds during the meeting. Staff will evaluate site suitability, installation needs, liability language and potential maintenance responsibilities before reporting back.
